7600

Motion Design ll | Spring 2023

Task

Create a title sequence for your “own” hypothetical film, television, or online narrative. Tell a story visually, convey a concept, and establish a certain psychological, emotional mood, while carrying some information with type.

Storyline

New space force recruits, being led by Captain Marcus Massino, have just left for their first 2 month tour, patrolling the established U.S. territories on the moon. A week after departure, turmoil has erupted back on their home planet. Before connection with mission control dissipates, Massino gets word a nuclear war has begun. With only 2 months worth of resources, survival is questioned. Returning to Earth is no longer an option.

What is the meaning of 7600?

7600 is an emergency “squawk code” number that is used in aviation to signal that an aircraft has lost their communication with the tower.

Visual Strategy

Cutting between scenes of silence (space) and scenes of destruction (earth). Begin slow, picking up pace in act two. Crashing to a close for act three, immediately back to a quiet reveal of the main title.

Type Strategy

Thick, more handwritten type, adding humanism back into the sequence. Typography is glitched in and out with text blockers, speaking to the sense of a loss of communication.
