Fuse
Publication Design | Case Study | Fall 2023
Task
Devise a design magazine proposal by planning an excerpt of 16 pages. The pages must have a logical consequence, and must be linked together, to demonstrate the evolution of the projects.
“How can sports design be interesting to people who don’t have a passion for it?”
“How can we change the way the game is portrayed through design”
Analysis
What
Design plays a larger role in sports that not many people would understand. It creates a strong visual identity, fostering team spirit and brand recognition among fans and sponsors.
How
Large, bold, and bright designs are constantly used within sports graphics. Without a doubt, it works.
I wonder…
Can sports graphics still impact people in the same way when turning to a more minimalistic route?
Design Approach
Big + Bold = Exciting
Minimal + Light = Exciting
Imagery Choices
Minimal is the idea of this magazine. I wanted to include that within the imagery as well. I leaned to tinting all my images blue, where the human was always the lighter shade of blue for consistency. Cuts in the imagery were used as well. This was to have the image take the form of the copy and “bend” with it.
Fuse
Fuse discusses the benefits that design elements have when they are “fused” together. The cover represents this as you see the type in fusion with an image, a tactic pulled from what I have noticed as best practices in this field.
Fusion can exist together with type + image, separately with type + image [as I alluded to in my imagery choices], and image + design elements, such as the dotted texture throughout the spreads.
